Glacier Trekking

Glacier Trekking is a truly unique Alaskan adventure with spectacular views of surrounding mountains, glacier crevasses and ice caves.

Matanuska Glacier is one of the few glaciers accessible by car. Located at Mile 102 of the Glenn Highway, one hour from the Agate Inn, this 4 mile wide by 26 mile long glacier has a lot to offer the adventure traveler.  There are two guiding services offering glacier trekking options.  Both provide all equipment, including crampons.

MICA Guides (800-956-6422) is located at the base of the glacier.  Options include glacier trekking, ice climbing and mountaineering adventures.

NOVA Alaska’s Adventure Company (907-745-5754) offers four hour guided glacier hikes.  Combination glacier trekking and river rafting trips are also available at the terminus of the glacier.

River Rafting

Several river rafting adventures are available near the Agate Inn.  Both guides provide all the necessary equipment.

NOVA Alaska’s Adventure Company (907-745-5754) offers several options on the Matanuska River and the Chickaloon River.  The Glacier Run, Class II and III starts at the Matanuska Glacier.  Lion Head, Class IV whitewater rafting runs 14 miles of the Matanuska River.

Lifetime Adventures (907-746-4644) rafts Eagle River.  Choose half-day scenic floats, whitewater trips, or a combination of the two.

Heli-Hiking and Heli-Skiing

To reach areas off the road system, Last Frontier Air Ventures (907-745-5701) offers helicopter hiking, fishing and skiing adventures.  Take a helicopter ride to King Mountain for a day climb or spend a day skiing on a high mountain glacier, even in the middle of the summer.

Guided Nature Tour with Biologist/Naturalist Mark Masteller

View wildlife and explore areas tame or wild areas by foot, boat, horse, plane or helicopter with local Biologist/Naturalist Mark Masteller.  Learn about bear safety, local wildlife and their habitats, or search for rocks and fossils.

The mountains and valleys surrounding the Agate Inn have unlimited adventure possibilities for the whole family.
